I thought this was an excellent book. Well written and filled with entertaining stories. But the thing I loved the most about this book is that it just let me enjoy the author’s adventures with wildlife without getting upset. What I mean by that is, I read A LOT of books about people, nature, and their experience with wildlife. In almost every book, a huge portion of the story goes into staggering levels of habitat decline, the cruelties of poaching, and how no matter what we do from this point on, there’s almost no saving the remaining wildlife left on the planet. Of course I know all this is true. But you know what, I love animals, and some times I just want to read a book that just talks about animals....and not their impending and probable doom. I have almost gotten to the point where I can no longer read any stories to do with animals, as it seems like almost every story is threaded with tragedy throughout. Not this book though. It was just interesting and fun and focused on how lucky the author feels to have spent a portion of his life observing so many of the amazing animals that the African continent has to offer. Bottom line, I wasn’t depressed after reading this book like I am after reading so many other books that center around animals.
Peter's suggestion that guests were the main component of the stories is not entirely accurate. There was not much in the way of embarrassing events by guests. Most of the stories were about his experiences with animals and the descriptive method of his writing made this book easy to read but quite vivid. I have a much better appreciation for the experience i am about to have in Africa. I recommend this book.Oct 2014 updatehaving been to Botswana now i can say this book is even more insightful. the stories are ok but the knowledge of how animals communicate is valuable. it was obvious when the elephants did the low rumble that signaled it was time to move and that identified the matriarch of the group. the alarm calls were easy to spot, tracking was easier. sure we had guides but it was nice to be able to know some of what they were about to say and participate in the conversation and ask good questions. i credit this book with that.also worth noting that prior to our trip when i told my wife of these stops she quickly said i am not going to africa to see birds. i though i was sunk. on the contrary, the wetland experience is fantastic, not dusty (duh) and the birds are not what you might imaging if you are not a birder. they were graceful nd beautiful and spectacular. we n=both loved the birds and we saw plenty of other stuff in Botswana. elephants and hippos were everywhere, you could not escape them and in the delta you ken get right up to them, literally, in boats. Botswana was amazing. the river and the delta. if you go to Botswana do both. there is nothing like it on the savanna or even in the bush. unique.
I read this just before my Botswana safari & I learned things that they would never put in the tour brochure. It was very funny & I found it interesting to read about the places I would visit.
Hmm, I wanted to like it, but having to recommend a single African Safari book for a luggage constrained friend going on photo safari, this would be third and not a close third. Perhaps I just enjoy Capstick Hathaway's writing style more, but I also feel this book lacks some of the impressive insights into animal behavior i was hoping to glean as a photographer and wannabe big game hunter.To be clear I would suggest this be on your list if you want to glean some insights into life in a remote hunt/photo camp, but "The Last Ivory Hunter: The Saga of Wally Johnson" and "Death in the Long Grass" might be better for the rucksack. The former for both historical perspective of safari in Africa and the sheer (and sometimes terrifying) adventure in that golden age and the latter as insight into animal predation methods. "Don't run" is more a biography, although well written and with a sense of humor, was not as immersive as I would have hoped.
I really enjoyed this book. Not just for its interesting and descriptive stories about the amazing wild animals of Africa, but equally as much for the insight from the perspective of a safari guide. Managing and directing people is not always easy, and with the added risk that the African bush provides, it comes with some very exciting and humorous stories.
This is light reading and, if you like to people watch, it is as much about how people from different cultures react to unusual situations as it is about how wild animals react to encounters with strange human beings. Each short chapter is about a different encounter so it is an easy book to pick up and put down. Nice book for traveling especially if you might be headed to Africa to go on Safari. But the "Don't run!" advice can equally well apply in Alaska or wherever predatory mammals may be found. I got a lot of chuckles out of this book. My wife is always coming up with something to worry about regarding animal encounters on our hikes ( grizzly bears, black bears, alligators, mountain lions, moose, have all been in striking range at one time or another). After reading this book, I have to defer to all of her concerns and err on the side of caution from now on.The book is also fun when the author describes his encounters with the assortment of homo sapiens from various countries and social strata and how they act on safari.Ho! Ho! Ho!
Very funny, but more important quite useful as a book to read before going on safari. This is a well known book in Botswana -- even our guides had read it. Having it set partially in Botswana was great, and the stories about foolish tourists gave us excellent advice on what NOT to do! Allison is a very good, engaging writer. Definitely worth reading before a trip to Africa.
