From Publishers Weekly
In her newest book, Schlessinger (10 Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives) relies upon her experience in private practice, radio and letters she received from men and women in tackling the issue of women who mistreat their men and suffer the consequences of unhappiness. The women who criticize their husbands in the stories that Schlessinger relates are depressed in their marriages and feel little love from their husbands. Unabashedly asserting that man is a "very simple creature," who needs only "direct communication, respect, appreciation, food, and good loving'" to respond with devotion, compassion and love, this controversial marriage and family therapist claims that every woman can achieve a deeply satisfying marriage if she adheres to certain fundamentals men require. Preparing dinner, caring for the children without complaint, greeting her husband with a kiss and engaging in sexual intimacy instead of "tearing down a husband's necessary sense of strength and importance" can result in the harmonious marriage women crave. While many of her listeners and readers claim her unequivocal advice has salvaged teetering marriages and improved marital harmony, others perceive Schlessinger as a throwback to what many see as years of female oppression in the home. From Booklist
Dr. Laura gets back into the battle of the sexes in this new offering, which will bring Marabel Morgan's Total Woman (1975) to the minds of readers of a certain age. Schlessinger doesn't advise women to greet their husband in saran wrap, as Morgan did, but she does tell women to shape up, literally and figuratively. Women need to understand that men are sensitive creatures who want to protect and cherish their wives. Is it any wonder that marriages go bad when churlish female spouses withdraw their affection, make unreasonable demands, and don't understand the male nature? In point of fact, there is nothing wrong with (or revolutionary about) Schlessinger's core point: be nicer and more nurturing to your spouse, and he will be nicer to you. But she beats her message to death, resorting to wild generalizations; repeating ideas, thoughts, and phrases ad infinitum; and bolstering her arguments with endless examples from callers and fax writers who are all making mistakes until shown the light. Not surprisingly, Dr. Laura promises no similar title for the care and feeding of wives. Apparently there would be no fun in that. Ilene CooperCopyright © American Library Association. Her position on women and men is not currently popular, which says more about the prejudices of our times than her thesis. I'm a 74 year old widow, attorney, and mother. I've worked most of my life and started working when my profession was mostly made up of men. I'm all for equality before the law and equal pay for equal work and acknowledging that intellectually women can compete with men. But the idea that women and men are the same is to deny both sexes their inherent powers. Read this book and glory in the differences!
I bought this book because it was highly recommended by a friend. It puts all the blame of marital problems on women and god forbid you work outside of the home. Dr. Laura seems to believe that a woman's place is in the kitchen serving her husband and not making her own needs and desires known. There were many times that I was so enraged with what she says that I threw the book. I only read the first 2 chapters because I was determined to get through it but the book left such a nasty taste in my mouth that I couldn't finish it.
I really loved and hated this book at the same time! It was a difficult read in that it can be hard to look at yourself and recognize your faults... or the stupid way you act/react within your relationship. I had recently come to the realization that you can only change yourself, not someone else. When I mentioned this to a family member and how I would like to have a better relationship but wasn't sure how to start, he immediately said "I have a book your going to initially hate, but I think you should read." How right he was. I did take this book with a grain of salt, not all the situations applied to me, and sometimes I was left thinking "what is going on with these women?!" but I tried to imagine each scenario with my own relationship. I took notes, made a list of all the things I could change in my behavior and went to work on ME. And... it is working! No, I don't kiss his feet every day, but I do make an effort to make him feel appreciated, loved, and truly cared for. It is amazing to me how a few months after reading this, making a plan, and sticking to it, how much better my relationship already is. It was REALLY difficult at first; I actually made myself grab the book, pick a random page and start reading to remind myself why I was doing this whenever I wanted to quit. It's hard being the one to make those changes without any concrete reward. But, I did decide that these were changes that I would like to make no matter what - if my relationship changed, fantastic! If not, I was still becoming a better person to be around. That mentality really kept me going. Good luck to all of you reading this book, I hope it works as well for you as it did for me! *Please be sure to read her forward, she does make a note to say that this book is NOT for everyone. If you are in a truly abusive relationship, with someone who has real psychological issues etc this is not for you!
This was an amazing book, and a great read for any wife, whether 1 year or 20 years into her marriage. For those that don't know, Dr. Laura is as old fashioned as they come as far as the roles and responsibilities of a man and woman in a relationship. Her advice will ruffle some of your feathers (or all of them depending on how old fashioned your own way of thinking is). This book was recommended by my sister-in-law right after I got married. I forgot about it for a while, and recently remembered it and decided to read it. I have been married 4 1/2 years, and even though my husband and I are not having any issues as of now, it made me stop and re-evaluate my behavior towards him. Dr. Laura uses insights from letters from husbands and wives along with callers from her radio show, to highlight and discuss ways that women need to "behave" towards their husbands in order to have a fulfilling and loving marriage. Some of the pointers are hard to swallow, and make you want to throw away the book because it's absolute "nonsense" (and I am an old fashioned woman). But when you get past the shock value, and really think about the points she is making, it really is a beneficial "self-help" book that will strengthen your marriage if you head its advice.
This book was an eye opener.& by the title I did not expect it to be.I think EVERY woman should read this book.I picked this book up as a joke while doing a 50s housewife challenge (to head off my new job as a homemaker, having worked full-time before).I expected it to be either very antiquated or sexist, and found it to be neither. This book is about stuff that should probably be obvious, but sadly I think a lot of women (myself included) have gotten caught up in negative attitudes, negative talk, & negative expectations at times. This negativity makes life worse for ourselves, not just our significant others, whom we are supposed to care about, but may not be treating them in that way. This book showed me that some of the things I have done & said in relationships were incredibly rude & selfish/inconsiderate.This is the 3rd copy I have purchased. The 2nd copy I gave to my mother (also a homemaker), whom I was not sure would enjoy the book but I told her that I thought it could make HER happier.Just this Father's Day I went over & she had actually made dinner for the first time in years. It was really good. I thought my mom COULD cook, but we (us kids) have never really seen her try until now (I think she used to when we were younger, ~4 or younger, but I do not remember).I guess we all get caught up in some sort of entitlement like "why should "I" have to do that?!" but the question could easily be, "why should he have to do that??"It is a QUICK read, for myself personally, it took me maybe 3 days, could take a week if you are exceptionally busy.
