Even if you are not from the "Old Neighborhood" of 48228, I think this book is well worth the read.I just finished the book Dog Water Free, by Michael Jay. I am not a book reader however, I enjoyed the journey the author took me through. I was able to connect and reflect on his many experiences. The book surrounds his journey through life set in the Old Neighborhood of 48228. I think it is well worth your time to obtain a copy and read and reflect. It is a story of "coming of age" I could go on and on, but being "brief", should capture your attention. Thank you Michael (Mikee) for this book. Michael Jay
In Michael Jay’s memoir, Dog Water Free, he tells the story of his upbringing in a middle-class Detroit neighborhood. He focusses especially on his relationship with his mother, who died too soon and too early is his young life. It turned out to be a remarkable life, not without its sorrows, but with amazing opportunities. It is well written and quite an interesting story. Although I’m at least ten years older than Michael, it happens that I grew up one street over in the same neighborhood and remember that some of my family and his were acquaintances, if not friends, so the sense of place that he provides is very familiar to me. Even if it isn’t known to you, I think you will still find this to be a page-turner. Reading it kept me up past my bedtime and I thank Michael for the memories.
A heartfelt story of family and the journey we take called life. I enjoyed the way Michael tells his story....letting it unfold through his memories and emotions. Marge is his strength and he relied on her as his Mother and his friend. Losing her impacted not only his life but his entire family. Growing up in an era where Men were Men and Ladies were not only meant to be Ladies but were also expected to be strong and resilient. The ending was very well written...I came away feeling as though I knew this family and felt close to all the characters.Well done Michael....well done!
Dear Michael Jay, can't express how much I enjoyed your book, especially having grown up 1 mile from your home and meeting up with my future husband for a ride home from school in '68/'69, RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR HOUSE!Your book made me LOL, sob like a baby and be amazed at the turn of events. Your mother was some kind of wonderful! Thanks for allowing us to "peak in the window" of your life. BTW, just sent another copy to my brother and wife, she attended St. Suzanne's.They live in Michigan. I know they'll love the book.PS. Wished we could have known a little bit more of your romantic life.
Loved this bookI grew up in the same area, attended the same Church and even though I am 10 years his senior, Mikee's experiences are so like what I remember.I come from a large Catholic family and so much of this book really could be my family. Life was school, homework, playing outside till the street lights came on, etc. The memories this books evokes! Corner store, parades, Tobagganing at Rouge Park, ice skating at the nearest frozen water. Anyone who grew up in that era, no matter where they lived, can relate to this book.Found my self rooting Mikee on to do this or get that. Later pure joy, as Mikee gets one of his wishes.Highly recommend this book. I really loved it. It was a very fast read for me,and I know I will read it again, probably in the summer sitting out in the sun! The better to relive the summer parts. Thanks Michael looking forward to reading more of your work.
Having grown up seven years later in nearby neighborhoods to Mikie, this story brought back many memories. I posted a note on Facebook that everyone in our high school group should read it. Thanks for writing this!
What a wonderful story. I lived in the suburbs but went to high school with Mike (not Mikee by then), knew his father had died and then was aware, as all classmates were, that he was losing his Mom. I'd been to the house, met Kathy and knew Patrick and Bubba. Always wondered how Kathy, at such a young age herself, managed to take care of her brothers and afford to feed teenagers and that dog! But I never knew the real details of their wonderful story. All of us with Irish Moms were blessed, but Marge spent much more time, because she didn't have time, imparting valuable life lessons one on one with Mikee. And the coincidences with Mikee's life intersecting with Marge's dreams were outstanding. I loved the writing style and imagery, which took me back to long forgotten memories. I read the book in one sitting - couldn't wait the turn the next virtual page. This will make a great movie. Congratulations on a job well done, Michael.
