Peter Tremayne’s “Bloodmoon†begins where the “Night of the Lightbringer†left off. But it’s a less appealing addition to the Sister Fidelma series.The novel opens well enough, with Fidelma, husband Eadulf, and the warrior Enda drawn to investigate political rumors they don't quite add up and Fidelma is not permitted to explain. For two-thirds of the book, our heroes deal with murder, treachery, incarceration, and trouble at sea.But then the action collapses, largely because the principle agents in this story operate outside of it. We know who they are and what they might be doing, but don’t encounter them as dramatic characters. Instead in the concluding chapters we watch as Fidelma and crew stumble through almost random encounters in the wilderness that reveal what’s been happening elsewhere. An historical afterword goes some way toward explaining why the plot of “Bloodmoon†is more intricate than satisfying. But the book remains a disappointment.At least I discovered a new word.
Fidelma is being cagey with both Eadulf and her bodyguard as they travel to the Abbey. Then they find that the Abbot is dead and the mysterious girl cousin has vanished. Strange things are afoot in a strange land of somewhat unfamiliar territory. There is an unbreakable vow, lots of old Irish customs, and marital tension. Fidelma is a bit of an acquired taste based on the other reviews. Fidelma keeps a lot of information secret and the Ireland of the High Kings era is built up a lot over the course of the series. So I would recommend starting at the beginning rather than trying to piece the politics of the various tribes and customs out of any single entry.
I've been reading Fidelma books from the very beginning, but reading the last two I already started thinking, it is time to stop, and this one made me convinced of it.I do not thik the plots were ever particularly convoluted, but the biggest problem for me are very long and tedious explanations of Irish customs and what is called what. Yes, they provide the charming atmosphere which is the reason why I got into these books, but lately there seems to be simply too much of that.
As always I like Peter Tremayne's stories of Ancient Ireland. However, this story drags. It does not have the sharpness of his previous novels. Sister Fidelma spends a lot pf time being annoyed and silent regarding her "geis". Whoever edited this work missed spelled or seemed to leave out many words. If there is another book get a different editor!
I always anxiously await the new Sister Fidelma mystery. This one does not disappoint. A good mystery using the ability of the human mind to sort through the confusion of clues.
I love the Sister Fidelma tales and I especially enjoy the author's knowledge of those times AND the fact thatwomen are equals! The books are exciting and fun to read.
Interesting storeyline. More complex than most of the other novels. I did not enjoy the read as much as usual. I found Fidelma to be more arrogant and rude than she usually is and it affected the tone of the story in an unpleasant way. Nevertheless I can't wait for the next one
This is a very good read. Enjoyed it just as much as the other Fidelma books.
