Rabbit Moon

From School Library Journal

PreS-K—A rabbit who lives on the moon turns bedtime wishes into stars. One day he decides to take a star and grant a wish of his own. He sails down to Earth and has the opportunity to have fun with some newfound friends. This whimsical story has a rhyming structure that makes it a wonderful read-aloud. The plot is inspired by Korean folklore and includes many fantastical elements that can be attributed to traditional folk narrative. The text is written in a gold font which gives it an illuminated look reminiscent of stars in the night sky. Fragmented sentences will keep readers engaged and curious about what happens next. Paneled illustrations convey sequential happenings and movement in the story and provide interesting details that are not conveyed in the text. Playful rounded animal characters pop against the dark night sky. VERDICT A calming and refreshing bedtime selection that explores themes of friendship, imagination, and exploration.—Deanna Smith, formerly at Mamaroneck Public Library, NY

I got this book from the library, and loved it so much I bought it. A lot of kids books are similar storylines, and this one was just different for once, so sweet, love that wishes become stars. Pretty illustrations.

I loved the creativity behind the story and illustrations. I also liked that it was inspired from an Asian folklore, allowing a natural transition to discuss about related stories with children after reading the book.

The book's greatest strength is its artwork - it is warm and soft-edged and soothing, and though the story takes place at night, it doesn't feel dangerously dark. The second best thing is (at least for our family) the opportunity to discover the East Asian story of the rabbit in the moon. In this book, the rabbit in the moon takes the wishes from people on earth and turns them into stars, which is a lovely idea, though the scientist in the family got a little grumpy about introducing that idea to kids. :)There's a weird jump in logic in the story that irked me, but basically the rabbit decides to grant a wish of his own and make some friends down on earth, but then, of course, no one's up there making stars, so he goes back but maintains the friendships on earth.Don't know if this is going to be in a prime space in our library, but as mentioned, the art work is lovely and the chance to talk about stories from other cultures is great.

This is a delightful little book. My 4 year old twins get very excited when we read a new book and this was not a disappointment. The the illustrations are pretty great and allow for more discussion than the simple words of the story. We found ourselves discussing all of the nuances on each page. This is based on Asian folklore and is a story that I have not heard before. Instead of a man, a rabbit lives in the moon and he receives wishes in the form of letters from Earth. He takes those wishes, helps to make them a reality and then grabs a wish of his own. As a responsible friend, he notices that wishes aren't being granted by the lack of stars in the sky. Leaving his friends, he decides to do the honorable thing and go back to work leaving. His friends then come up with a fantastic way to grant rabbit a wish and keep in touch. Again a great little story with really nice illustrations. It's a large book and there is a high-quality feel to the paper and jacket.

Rabbit Moon by Jean KimArthur A. Levine booksReview by Debra L ScottA gentle tale nspired by Korean folklore featureing soft illustrations and soothing rhymes to make a very lovely bedtime story for young children. Animal children write their wishes to the Rabbit on the moon, but does Rabbit have his own wish? What will happen if Rabbit comes down to play? The rhymes are a little rough in places, and the illustrations are done with dark shady backgrounds which are a little hard to see in dim bedtime light. However this feels very much like a Goodnight Moon type of book that will be cherished and read through generations.Review based on Advanced Reader copy.

A very sweet story about wishes, stars, and friendship. Critters on Earth send wishes via paper airplanes to the moon. The moon rabbit turns those wishes into stars that fill the night air. Then he decides to fulfill his own wish and floats to Earth via a star balloon. He plays and hangs out with his friends until he realizes there are no stars left in the sky. His friends help him return home to the moon. Then they send a paper airplane with a box containing a telescope so that he can look down on his friends. So cute and endearing. The pictures are very pretty and well drawn. Although simple in design and text, the story is very rich. One of my new favorites.

Rabbit Moon is a delightful story taken from Korean folklore. Rather than a man in the moon or green cheese, Koreans may see a rabbit. The rabbit has the ability to grant wishes to Earth inhabitants, who are cute animals, by turning their wishes into stars. So far, so good. However, the rabbit has his own wish to visit Earth and enjoy himself. He does this, but as time goes on the stars disappear. The rabbit then knows what he must do.The written graphics in the story are few, making the book suitable for younger children. The drawn images are wonderful, often filling an entire page or even a two-page spread. Everyone should enjoy this book.

This is fairly good children's book. The best aspect of the book are the illustrations and the unique style of the artwork. The pictures are large and aesthetically pleasing without being overly busy. The color composition lends to evening relaxation making this a good book to read before bedtime. The story itself is quite creative but a little metaphorical for the average 3 year old which this is targeted towards. Even explaining the Korean folklore this is coming from, didn't really help alleviate the confusion when I was reading this to my daughter. After a couple of readings, she enjoyed the story more.
