As a new-to-homeschooling parent I decided, for French, to use the same curriculum my daughter had been using in public school. This set is easy for her to understand and helpful in teaching new concepts to students without being too hand-holdy. I like that it's not an older, "dry" curriculum as the layout and content of the lessons keep her attention and keep her focused on learning French. (It's also excellent at refreshing my years-old high school French so that I can teach her correct pronunciation etc.). If you're homeschooling and French is in your curriculum plan, I couldn't recommend the Bien Dit! set highly enough.
I tutor French and I like the Bien dit! series. They offer a lot of tools to get the student to talk and understand the matter at hand. While it's good for a one-to-one teaching, I noticed that few of my students go through all the exercises and tools that the book offers by themselves. For them it is overwhelming. If they're forced to do so, then they do learn the data. I'm giving it a 4 because, a student on his own has a rough time going through the amount of materials presented.
This is the textbook that was used at my kids' school and that my daughter is currently using in her own classroom. The price I paid was a steal and the book is in excellent condition.
The Bien dit! series, like so many contemporary text books, is all flash with little substance. The visual lay out is unnecessarily busy, information is poorly laid out, exceptions to rules are introduced somewhat randomly, grammatical progressions are ill conceived, and the choice of many of the vocabulary words is rather silly. Very poor series.
Having taught French for many years from a variety of texts, I like the clear structure of this series as well as its cultural highlights from the Francophone world. An extra feature of this program is its periodic review pages for vocabulary acquisition - a nice addition!
I love learning French. I will definitely be getting the other books when funds allow.
Great workbook with lots of activities to help you learn French. We bought this as an aid to the Berlitz French cds that we had already purchased. Well worth the money.
