Review
Praise for Long Mile Home "A new book about the Boston Marathon bombings last April is more gripping than a mystery novel, has more deeply drawn characters than a literary novel and is enriched by the details of a history book...It's an incredible story, and the heart-rending pictures in the middle of the book are a stark reminder that it's real, not fiction." - Associated Press"The account by tow Boston Globe reporters, Scott Helman and Jenna Russell, succeeds in every way. It is a harrowing narrative of the events and a behind-the-scenes look at the public officials and everyday people forever changed by the attack. It is also a portrait of a major American city, its psyche and the distance runners who consider the race a sacred rite." - The Washington Post"Long Mile Home—at times gripping, occasionally hopeful, always heartbreaking—is essential to understanding what happened last April, and, in some ways, the city in which those events happened." - Boston Globe “A riveting piece of journalism and an exceptional tribute to a great American city that manages to avoid being sentimental or syrupy.” –USA TODAY“Accounts of heroism, pride, and victory in the aftermath of tragedy make this must-read surprisingly uplifting”—Fitness"This is a stunning, mesmerizing and fascinating book. We get to see the horror close up, its beginnings, enactment and its terrible legacies. This is a remarkable achievement of a still stupefying act." - Providence Journal"[A] gripping account”—New York Daily News“A suspenseful and emotional experience.”—Sarasota Herald-Tribune"A wonderful work of narrative journalism" - The Telegraph"In a remarkable work of narrative journalism, Boston Globe journalists Helman (co-author: The Real Romney, 2012) and Russell (co-author: Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy, 2009), with support from their comrades at the Globe’s news department, map out the heartbreaks, dogged pursuits and courageous acts of defiance that resulted from one of America’s most foolhardy and cowardly acts of terrorism...Journalism that demonstrates all the arguments why we need professionals to tell the stories that mark our generations and a valentine to the people that proved Boston Strong." - Kirkus

Long Mile Home is a richly detailed account of the Boston Marathon Bombing of 2013, written by two of the Pulitzer-Prize winning team of reporters from The Boston Globe. The book reads like fiction, with minute-by-minute portraits of the race officials, the bombers and the victims. I have recommended this book to numerous friends; I have no hesitation in rating it 5 stars! (If it holds any disappointment, it is in the lack of information about the young widow of the older bomber, but I presume she was not disposed to give interviews. The authors are meticulous in their documentation of facts and refrain from speculation when information is lacking. I appreciate that!)
as a runner it was inspiring and heartbreaking. I ran Boston when I turned 50, a kind of milestone for any average runner and when I heard about the bombing I was so shocked. It also brought home the horrors of what blind hatred and extremism can do. The courage of the people who were injured and the people who came to their aid was extraordinary. I hope the trial comes and goes without fanfare and the second perpetrator is convicted and jailed for the rest of his life. Others, because of his and his brother's actions, must live with loss of their loved ones and physical as well as emotional damage the rest of theirs.
This is a definitive, well-written book about the 2013 bombing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. It was written by two Boston Globe reporters with the input and help of many others. The book introduces many of those injured and killed, first-responders and the perpetrators. It discusses the marathon itself, the chaos and aftermath of the explosions and the eventually successful search for the perps. The book is highly recommended for anyone interested in Boston, true crime, running or just reading a good, if terrible, story.
This was an in depth, well researched book. That was such a shocking and very sad event. So many lives changed forever and the loss of lives I was so sad for the families who lost their precious loved ones. Plus it is impossible to understand what was in the minds of the killers. I learned many details regarding the events that I didn't know and was very touched with how all the injured victims and their families are fighting back to rebuild their lives.
I write this on the day of the race one year after the terrorist attacks of the Boston Marathon. This story although not fully told as of this time, is a well written and researched book into the effects that terrorism has all of our American society. The authors have done a wonderful job of connecting the reader to the victims of this act. We learn firsthand of the struggles, the courage, and the intestinal fortitude of America citizens.
I found this book to be well researched and well written. The technique of following individuals through the day and then for almost a year afterward made this presentation much more personal. Having grown up a short distance from where the turn is taken in Newton off Washington Street on to Commonwealth Avenue, the book brought back memories of being at the corner. Old timers may remember Jane's luncheonette being at that corner. Let us hope that there never has to be another book written like this.
A book which was found in the Dollar Store, but worthy of being on the best seller list. This book was so well written with so much passion one felt that you were actually there at that scene when those bombs went off, you felt the pains,, the felt the lose of life, you were there for the search of those two terrorists.
A well written story of the Boston Marathon bombing. It gives a close insight into some of the victims personal lives as well as the lives of the bombers. A recommended read.
